Getting Here

Arrival times

Please do not arrive before 4pm, although we can sometimes agree an earlier time if you ask us in advance. Apart from that there is no need to be definite on timing as the key is left for you (see house guide).

It takes about 30 minutes to drive here from any of the ferries.

Ferry routes

There are three ferry routes to Mull all run by  CalMac (Caledonian Macbrayne). We have listed them in order of popularity with some suggestions as to which might be best for you. The headings are links to the relevant summer timetable.

Oban to Craignure
The most crossings each day, but to be safe you have to book especially in busy periods. You MUST arrive more than 30 minutes before your sailing, or you will definitely lose your booking and there may not then be room on that ferry, or even the next one, and in extreme cases not even for the rest of the day.
There is a good Tesco's in Oban if you need to stock up before arriving and there is a kiosk on the pier selling fresh sea food. The ferry sails past Duart Castle just before it arrives on Mull and is the best way to see the Island for the first time. Please note that due to issues with the continued use of ageing ferries, sailings are often cancelled, or timetables amended, sometimes with little notice. So check carefully well before you pass Tyndrum, so you can easily divert via Lochaline if you have to.
To book ring 0800 066 5000 or do it online.

Lochaline to Fishnish
This normally involves two ferries as to get to Lochaline you will need to use the Corran ferry to cross Loch Linnhe. The combined cost of the two ferries is about the same as the Oban one. There is about 45 minutes more driving, but you save an equivalent time by not having to arrive at least half an hour early at Oban to avoid losing your booking. Neither ferry is bookable (pay onboard) but services are frequent and it’s rare not to get on the first or at least the second ferry. We always go this way, as it’s much less stress than cutting the Oban ferry too fine and you get to see some lovely country including Rannoch Moor, Glencoe and Morvern.

Kilchoan to Tobermory
A tiny ferry and the drive along Ardnamurchan to get to Kilchoan, although beautiful, is very long and twisty. Only a sensible option if you are coming from Mallaig, unless you think that the scenery is worth the much longer drive. Not bookable (pay onboard)

Which Ferry?

If you have not been to Mull before and want to see as much of the Highlands and West Coast as possible, we recommend arriving on the Oban Ferry, leaving on the Lochaline one and doing a day trip to Ardnamurchan on the Kilchoan ferry whilst you are here. (NB return tickets on Cal Mac ferries are no cheaper than two singles, hence it makes sense to mix routes)

In bad weather the Lochaline Ferry will often keep going whilst the Oban one has stopped, but if that happens for too long queues will build up. To keep an eye on what is running go to CalMac's service status page and even register to get SMS text alerts for your chosen route

Getting to your ferry

If travelling from Glasgow take the Erskine bridge over the River Clyde and go up Loch Lomond, turning right half way up the loch to go on the A82/A85 past Crianlarich and on to Tyndrum (then as below).

From the north take the A9 south from Inverness and turn right at Kingussie to take the A86 to Fort William and then 5 miles down A82 to the Corran ferry (then as below)

From Perth and the North East take the A85 From Perth via Crieff to Lochearnhead turning right there to go on through Crianlarich to Tyndrum (then as below).

From all other areas head towards Stirling taking the M9 from Edinburgh or the M80 from Glasgow or the south. When nearly there, the two motorways join, and after about 5 miles take the first major turn left onto the A84. Follow this road through Doune, Callander, Strathyre and Lochearnhead, where it becomes the A85 and you eventually get to Crianlarich. Go through the village to turn right at the roundabout and go on to Tyndrum.

At Tyndrum you have two choices:

For Oban Ferry:

After Tyndrum turn left to keep following the A85 past Loch Awe to Oban. To find the ferry there, go right down the High Street until you get to a roundabout. Turn half right and then take the third right turn just after a right hand bend. Just before the terminal building, turn hard left to join the ferry queue nearest the water. Please don't get on the wrong ferry, as three operate from Oban. You want the one to Craignure (usually, but not always, the MV Isle of Mull or the Loch Frisa).

For Corran and Lochaline Ferries: After Tyndrum Keep on the A82 to go over Rannoch Moor, through Glencoe and across the Ballachulish Bridge. After 5 miles turn left to the Corran Ferry. When landing at Ardgour turn left onto the A830 and just before Strontian left again onto A861 which takes you to Lochaline. This is a single track road, but a good one. Remember that you must stop in or opposite one of the marked passing places to allow traffic coming the other way to pass, and also to allow traffic from behind to overtake.

From ferry to Ledmore

NB Do not set Sat Navs to the house coordinates or postcode, as many will take you either the wrong way, or to the wrong place! Instead use coordinates of 56.54113, -5.98038 or What Three Words of cook.pram.clocking both of which which will take you to the forestry track entrance

On landing from the Oban or Lochaline ferries turn immediately right on to the A849 and go on to Salen, where the road becomes single track. Continue through the village and on for two miles until you cross the Aros bridge. Go up to the top of the hill where the forestry on the left joins the road and you get a first glimpse of the sea on the right again. Turn sharp left onto a forestry track which has Loch Frisa signs (ignore the one about no unauthorised vehicles). After three miles, just after you first start to see the end of Loch Frisa, turn left down the hill. The house is the only one you can see and is just below the bottom of the loch.

Journey times

At the very minimum, allow at least 2 hours from the M9 at Stirling to either Oban or the Corran ferry and 50 minutes from the Corran ferry to Lochaline. You must though allow seriously more than this if you are a slow driver, wish to enjoy the scenery or its a Bank holiday, Summer weekend or other busy period. Remember also that for the Oban Ferry you have to be there at least 30 minutes before the sailing (see above).
