Nature at its best
My favourite walk (or bike ride) is to this view of the house with Loch Frisa in the foreground. You can see Ben More in the background, but also a tiny island on the right which is a Crannog, one of two on the loch. These were very ancient dwellings sited in the loch to provide safety and were built of timber on top of a pile of boulders placed into the loch as a foundation. All you can see now is the top of these boulders, but if you use our boat on a still day you can see how much more there is underneath. Must have taken a lot of building in those days!
Its a popular nesting spot for geese and also a good place to view purple orchids. We once counted 88 in all (and one white one!)
In the summer we have lots of orchids around the house and one field in particular to the left of the house, where we fear to tread for fear of trampling them! There are many varieties but the special ones are the many Butterfly Orchids, as seen here:
